Why chimney sweeping?
Fires can occur – they usually start in the flue.
A clean chimney provides efficient ventilation and allows for smoke and dangerous toxins to escape the home. When there is not sufficient ventilation creosote can build up in the chimney. Creosote is highly flammable. Chimneys can also gather twigs, leave, and sometimes birds nests that should be removed to prevent fires.
How often should you have your chimney cleaned?
This depends on how often you use your woodstove or fireplace. If it is used regularly year-round you may need to clean it more often. In most cases, your chimney should be inspected and cleaned at least once per year.
When is the best time to have a chimney swept?
You should have your chimney swept before you start to burn for the season. Booking in the spring or summer gives you more flexibility with scheduling as well as price savings – the fall can be quite busy. The spring and summer are also the safest time of the year as it can be dangerous working around ice or snow.

Your home insurance company may require a WETT Inspection
If you own a wood-burning unit, chances are at some point you will probably be asked for a WETT inspection by your insurance company. It is often required as an integral part of your home insurance policy.
A WETT inspection can also be requested for a real estate transaction of a home that has a wood-burning appliance.
In addition, if there was a fire involving the wood-burning unit, any of several institutions such as the police or fire department may recommend or request that you have a WETT inspection completed.
But my wood stove is already certified…
The organization that certified your wood-burning appliance only certifies that the appliance was built to certain standards. The certification on the woodstove does not assume that the unit was installed properly and therefore safe to use so this is where the WETT inspection comes into play.
